"How we got started....."
Scott Appalachian
Industries was started by Mr. Larry R. West in 1984, along with
the support and understanding from his wife Bonnie, who grew up
with a profoundly disabled older brother. With now numerous
additional staff, Scott Appalachian Industries continues to look
for new, creative, and better ways to serve increasing numbers
of citizens with disabilities. Scott Appalachian Industries has
experienced successful, steady, challenged growth now for more
than 20 years. The agency today provides supportive services in
the community, agency, workplace, and in the home. Services
range in complexity from a simple counseling session with a
counselor to 24 hour supports from a "team" of Direct Care
Providers.
Scott Appalachian
Industries was established and chartered as a public, non-profit
function of Scott County on June 28th, 1984. It is an effort to
provide a growing, expanding and maturing program of services
for the handicapped citizens of all ages in
Scott and surrounding communities, and discriminates against no
one because of age, race, sex, creed, handicap, or
national origin.
Once an application is
made at SAI, persons are served when and if background information
implicates services are appropriate. Services are individualized
and may vary vastly in scope and quantity from one service recipient
to another. In general, the agency seeks to
serve anyone who qualifies, but whose participation is mutually beneficial to
self, other individuals being served, and the agency’s mission.
The agency operates under a policy of
normalization. An oversimplified explanation of normalization is
both quality mature treatment of and
promoting quality mature
reactions from a person who has reached a mature age. Scott
Appalachian Industries strives to promote development of
socially preferred and life enhancing qualities and
opportunities for citizens.
